So How I Met Your Mother ended yesterday. There was a lot of outrage about the ending. I personally loved the ending. It was what the series needed. Now to address a few things
SPOILERS IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED THE SERIES FINALE OF HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
1. Penny and Luke were right. the entire story was not about the mother. The story was about Robin. It’s always been about Robin. If it wasn’t all about Robin, then Ted is a horrible story teller. The point of the story was that Ted, 6 years after losing his wife, has fallen in love with Robin once again. But this time, all of their quarrels from the past have been solved. Ted has kids. Robin has traveled around the world for her job and has finally settled down (note the dogs she has once again. She wouldn’t do any huge traveling with that number of dogs to take care of unless she constantly used the kennel’s services). They are now perfect for each other when they weren’t before. This doesn’t diminish any love that Ted ever had for Tracey. We can see that he truly loved her and she truly loved him back. They had 11 wonderful years together, more than many couples today have. And Ted has followed Tracey’s advice. After this final episode, he’s not living through his stories anymore. He’s moving on. And that’s okay.
2. Barney and Robin just don’t work. It was very clear during their first breakup that even though they are a cute couple (positively adorable), there are just way too many issues between the two personalities that will allow them to work. This argument could be used for Robin and Ted as well, but most, if not all of their issues have been solved thanks to Ted’s first marriage and Robin’s self-imposed isolation from the gang. Barney reverts back to his old self, which is maddening, but who doesn’t slip backwards after some form of breakup? It has been painfully clear that Barney’s instinct after a breakup is to put himself with as many women as possible. And as we all know, it is this instinct that finally forces him to take that final step to become an adult.
3. I would have loved to see more of Tracey throughout the season, but I think that the amount of her that we saw was perfect. We saw enough of her to see that she and Ted go together perfectly. We see a tragic story of who she is and how she ended up at this point. During this backstory, we learn that she loves a man named Max, who died on her birthday. Throughout the years, she has stayed true to him even though she is no longer able to have him. She meets Ted and she is able to have the life that she should have had with Max, but with Ted. This doesn’t diminish the love she has for Ted at all. Like I said before, they are clearly in love. They were just two broken people that fit together perfectly. When Tracey dies in 2024, it is a sad moment for Ted and the kids, but it can also be viewed as happy. Tracey has finally been reunited with Max. And in the end, Ted is reunited with Robin
Its not the ending that I would have wanted, but it seems like a perfect ending nonetheless. I’m in the minority with this opinion, but I’m okay with that. I’m able to take the entire series and love all of it while others will look upon the ending, and ultimately the series itself, with disgust and dismay.
I really hope that How I Met Your Dad holds up as well as this show.
